Wildlife Watching

With four walking trails, three water trails and an auto tour route (Wildlife Drive), the refuge is renowned for its wildlife observation and photography opportunities. The Wildlife Drive offers excellent views of local wildlife, including waterfowl, shorebirds, turtles, bald eagles, ospreys, and the Delmarva fox squirrel. An Observation Platform can be accessed by turning left at the first fork on the Wildlife Drive. Equipped with spotting scopes which offer a 360掳 view of the surrounding marsh, this is a prime spot from which to view eagles as they hunt and feed nearby.

Road Etiquette: When stopping to view wildlife along public roads, please be sure to get as far off the road as safely possible and turn on your hazard lights. Do not park near a blind corner, and do not block traffic. This will ensure the safety of visitors and residents alike.

NOTE: A majority of the Wildlife Drive and refuge trails will be closed periodically for deer management hunts during the 2025-26 hunting season. See this document for a full list of closures.
