Refuge Staff Band Solo's Mate

Old color photograph of a man and a woman in brown uniforms sitting on the ground holding a trumpeter swan to band its leg. Their is a green band already around tits neck. The bird is nearly as long as the the two refuge workers sitting side-by-side.

Refuge staff band the last nesting female trumpeter swan part of a struggling reintroduction project that started in the 1960's. The bird later was killed by cayotes while incubating her eggs in 1988. Her mate was dubbed "Solo" as he spent 21 years mostly alone after her death.
