Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) protects 4,662 acres of barrier island habitat, including 2,660 acres of salt marsh salt marsh
Salt marshes are found in tidal areas near the coast, where freshwater mixes with saltwater.

Learn more about salt marsh . Historic land management practices have altered the marsh鈥檚 ability to periodically flood and drain with the tides. To restore the marsh鈥檚 hydrology, refuge staff and partners conducted pilot studies of nature-based restoration techniques from 2014 to 2020. In 2021, they used a combination of these strategies to restore 100 acres of salt marsh.
