Sierra Nevada Bighorn sheep are federally listed as endangered. This subspecies of bighorn sheep has a historical range in the Sierra Nevada mountains from Sonora Pass in the north, to Olancha Peak in the south. These bighorn sheep live in elevations that range from 4,000-14,000 feet and have adapted to live in harsh mountain conditions. Predation, environmental factors, as well as concern of disease transmission from domestic sheep pose challenges to species recovery. Credit: Nathan Hurner/USFWS
