While the Stephens' kangaroo rat includes the word “rat�� in its name, this species is actually in the pocket mouse family. In 1988, the Stephens�� kangaroo rat was listed as federally endangered, due to loss of habitat from encroaching development. Now, the species is found only in the grasslands of two counties in Southern California: San Diego and Riverside.
