
About David Viker
David Viker is a 33-year veteran of the Service, starting his career as a volunteer, then intern, then entry-level employee. David has served in three programs of the Service in a permanent role and has served in long-term acting positions for several others. David worked on six field stations in five states before moving to the Atlanta Regional Office and ultimately Headquarters. Along the way on the ground, he earned a federal law enforcement commission, obtained fire management wildfire “red card� credentials, operated an array of heavy equipment pieces to manage habitat, and was actively involved in land acquisition.
In Regional and Headquarters positions, David has served as an Assistant Regional Director/Regional Chief of the Migratory Bird Program (2005-2011), National Wildlife Refuge System (2011-2022), Strategic Employee and Organizational Development (2022-2024), and Migratory Bird Program (2025-present). David is currently serving as the Acting Deputy Assistant Director, Migratory Bird Program (June 2025-present), and served for 60 days or more as Acting Assistant Regional Director for Office of Conservation Investment, Office of Communications, and as Deputy Regional Director.
Outside of Service work, David—and his better half of 29 years, Mary—have been volunteer youth sports coaches for more than 40 teams in basketball, baseball, softball, track and field, and soccer. His favorite times are spent with Mary, their four children and two grandkids, hunting, fishing, hiking, raising chickens, splitting firewood, and gathering around a fire with friends and family.
