that protects the shoreline at Bell Island Pier. The project is being completed ahead of schedule and, as of now, we expect a reopening of the area sometime in September/October.  A second project to replace the decking and railing of the pier is also in the planning stages and expected to be contracted later this fall.  We hope this project will occur in the winter to avoid impacting fall and spring fishing opportunities.  Updates will be posted on
 and on the refuge website.

Original Announcement: Bell Island Pier and Road on Swanquarter National Wildlife Refuge will be closed to all public access beginning March 17th for the construction of a stone breakwater structure. The new breakwater will enhance and extend the current structure and provide long-term protection to the shoreline and parking area of this popular fishing destination. Construction will require removal of a short section of pier and use of the parking lot as a delivery and staging area. The contractor estimates construction will continue through December 2025. Updates on progress and closures will be posted periodically on and on the refuge website. For questions about the project or for information on current closures, please contact the refuge.
