COURSE SESSION
Target Audience:
Critical Incident Stress Management Peer Support Members who are due for their three year refresher.
Summary and Objectives:
Through a peer-based system, the Service seeks to offer employees the opportunity to meet with a trained peer who can provide support and assistance in developing a plan to deal with job-related critical incidents and in problem solving personal issues before they become chronic and debilitating.
Following the initial 40 hour course Peer Support Members (PSM) must receive a minimum of 8 hours of training annually. It may be online or in-person. Every 3 years, PSMs must complete a 24-hour instructor-led recertification course dealing with advanced topics related to Critical Incident Stress Management.
These topics areas may include:
- Understanding the range of normal human responses following a critical incident
- Identify personal and professional resources to assist following a traumatic incident
- Develop techniques and a plan for coping with stress
- Other topic areas deemed appropriate by the National Program Coordinator
