Cyanea profuga, a member of the Campanulaceae (bellflower) family, is a short-lived perennial unbranched shrub 1.8 to 2.4 m (6 to 8 ft) tall. Leaves are elliptic, 18 to 24 cm (7 to 9.5 in) long, 7 to 10 cm (2.8 to 4 in) wide, glabrous (without hairs), margins callose-dentate (hard toothed), apex acuminate (pointed), base cuneate (wedge-shaped), with petioles 8 to 12.5 cm long (3 to 5 in). Inflorescences are 9- to 12-flowered. Calyx lobes are oblong, 3 to 5 mm (0.1 to 0.2 in) long, l to 2 mm (0.05 to 0.1 in) wide, with apex rounded then sharp-pointed. Corolla is white, 30 to 35 mm (1.2 to 1.4 in) long, 2 to 3 mm (0.1 to 0.15 in) wide, glabrous, the tube suberect with lobes spreading 3/4 as long to as long as the tube; staminal column and anthers glabrous, the lower two with apical tufts of white hairs. Berries are orange.
