Report on Smyrna鈥檚 Annual Boat Day
The Town of Smyrna celebrated its 16th Annual Boat Day with great success this year, marking another joyous occasion for residents and visitors alike. The event, dedicated to promoting clean water awareness and community engagement, provided a memorable day of fun on and off the water. Dale Hollow National Fish Hatcherywas proud to be a part of in giving hands on fish experience and knowledge about fish and water safety.
Event Highlights
This year, Boat Day was held under favorable weather conditions, allowing for optimum participation and enjoyment. The combined efforts of local organizations such as Smyrna Parks, Murfreesboro Parks, and MTOP resulted in an unprecedented number of kayaks and canoes available for attendees. A total of 421 individuals participated in the event, including 384 local residents and 43 dedicated volunteers.
The support from the Rutherford County Fire Rescue (RCFR) was invaluable. Chief Farley and his team generously provided their time and resources, ensuring a safety patrol throughout the event. Their presence allowed families to enjoy the activities on the water with peace of mind. Expressing gratitude to RCFR, it is hoped that they can be involved in future events.
Activities and Community Engagement
The day was structured to be family-friendly with various activities aimed at all age groups. Attendees had the opportunity to enjoy free kayak and canoe rides, which were supervised by knowledgeable staff from the Smyrna Outdoor Adventure Center (SOAC). These staff members provided essential instructions on safe watercraft operation and shared insights about the Paddle Adventures Program available through SOAC.
In addition to water activities, several local agencies set up engaging educational booths, offering hands-on activities focused on the importance of water quality and environmental stewardship. Dale Hollow National Fish Hatcherysupplied continuous supply of Rainbow Trout in a touch pool. This was exciting for the children and adults that have never touched a fish or specifically trout. The experience taught about the importance of clean water and how to handle a fish, along with how to take turns. Many times, there was a line of children and adults waiting to have a chance at the touch pool.Dale Hollow National Fish Hatchery also supplied a goodie bag with info about fishing and water safety. Children particularly benefitted from these interactive learning experiences, making the event both fun and informative.
The location of the event鈥擩efferson Springs Recreation Area at 7660 Jefferson Pike, TN Smyrna 鈥攚as ideal, providing beautiful scenery along the river. Attendees engaged in a variety of games and activities on the shore, further enriching the community spirit and enjoyment of outdoor recreation.
