Honoring Our Heroes: 12th Annual Wounded Warrior Fishing Event at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery

On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, the banks of Lake Cumberland came alive with gratitude, camaraderie, and the tug of striped bass on the line, as 27 U.S. military veterans were honored during the 12th Annual Wounded Warrior Fishing Event. This special event, hosted in partnership by the Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery and the staff at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, recognizes veterans who suffered injuries during their time of service.

Each year, this event offers a day of rest, reflection, and recreation set against the scenic beauty of Lake Cumberland and Hatchery Creek. Seven generous local guide services volunteered their time and resources to give these veterans a world-class guided fishing experience for stripers. This year's volunteer guides included Laker Guide Service, MegaBite Charters, JR Stevens Guide Service, Taylor's Guide Service, Stars and Stripers Guide Service, StriperKing Guide Service, and Morgans Guide Service. Thanks to their donation, veterans spent the morning watching the sunrise on the lake and reeling in memorable catches.

After reeling in several stripers, participants were welcomed back to shore with a delicious catered meal provided by Lora Walters, a dedicated member of the Friends of Wolf Creek NFH. The meal was followed by a moving ceremony led by members of the local Honor Guard and Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

As a token of appreciation, each veteran received thoughtful gifts and handmade cards from students of Otter Creek Academy in Monticello, KY. Their messages of thanks and support added a meaningful personal touch, reminding every veteran in attendance just how deeply their service is valued. Following the event, veterans were invited to enjoy trout fishing at Hatchery Creek, which was specially stocked for the occasion.

We would like to thank all those that made this event possible including the guide services, sponsors, the Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, and countless volunteers. Thank you to all service members for your sacrifice and commitment to our country!
