Volunteer Position Overview
About This Position
Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1945 following the Migratory Bird Act. It is over 51,000 acres of various habitat types set aside for the conservation of migratory birds with a focus on wintering waterfowl.ÌýThe refuge is broken up into 3 units, following a 65-mile stretch of the Tennessee River - Big Sandy, Busseltown and Duck River Unit(s).

Work location will primarily be on the Duck River Unit at 550 Refuge Lane New Johnsonville, TN 37134. It is the largest of the three units and the most actively managed as well. Volunteer tasks will be primarily outside work including: mowing, power washing, small engine maintenance, weed eating, spraying herbicide, painting, trash clean up, facilities maintenance, assisting with public environmental educational events and assisting with wood duck trapping and banding.Ìý Work may possibly include some light carpentry, plumbing and electrical work depending on volunteer's knowledge and skills.

In exchange for work completed, the refuge will provide volunteer with a covered, full hookup camper pad,Ìý laundry facility, work vehicle and tools.Ìý Minimum work hours are 24 hours per week per volunteer.Ìý The refuge is seeking volunteer to commit to 3 months minimum of work.Ìý Longer time period is also desired.
