The Little Yellow River: Repairing a Watershed for a Resilient Community
The marshes and peatlands of Necedah National Wildlife Refuge are vital nesting and stopover habitat for migratory birds in the Mississippi Flyway. Throughout Central Wisconsin, these habitats were ditched and drained for agriculture at the turn of the twentieth century. Meandering alluvial rivers like the Little Yellow River were straightened, impacting adjacent wetlands and the river's form and function. Necedah National Wildlife Refuge is completing a massive restoration effort to restore the Little Yellow River and 30,000 acres of wetland habitat.
